OLYMPIC GAMES PARIS 2024
A PERSONAL VIEW OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES IN PARIS

I wrote an article about the Olympic Games that aimed to be a reflection on a multicultural competition that brings together many countries. With this goal in mind, we went to Paris to explore several of its sporting events. It’s difficult to put into words what it feels like to be in a venue with so much diversity, with countries that we may not even know where they are.
Our first stop was at the Paris Nord venue, where the boxing events took place. The venue is small and cozy, and from its stands, you get a panoramic view of the ring. The boxing powerhouses are Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia, countries of the former and extinct USSR. The boxing event consists of three rounds of three minutes each. The difference compared to watching it on television is that on TV, the fights seem slower, while in person, everything happens very quickly. Watching a fight live allows you to catch many details, like the crowd's cheers, the noise of the coaches' voices, the boxer's movements, the punches, etc. You also get a better sense of the struggle with weight, as each category is divided by weight, which means that the fighters' bodies vary in height but not so much in weight.
The next stop at these Paris Games was the tennis tournament at the Roland Garros venue. The clay courts, often dominated by Spaniards, witnessed an Olympic tournament full of big surprises. In the women’s draw, the title was won by a Chinese player coached by a Spaniard, and in the men’s tournament, Djokovic defeated Carlos Alcaraz. Despite the high prices and the difficulties in getting tickets, the tennis venues were packed.
From there, we headed north to the aquatic center in Saint-Denis, where we watched the Spanish women’s water polo team face off against Greece. The Spanish team, who later became Olympic champions, demonstrated their superiority in strategy and strength over the Greek team. The aquatic center itself is a remarkable piece of infrastructure, with a wooden beam structure that creates a UFO-like shape. Inside, the venue is beautiful, and the atmosphere with the music, the speaker, and the pace of the water polo game make it very entertaining and spectacular.
The next day, we went to the racewalking events, where a Spanish man won the bronze medal and a Spanish woman the silver medal. It was an impressive setting, with a route beneath the Eiffel Tower that left an unforgettable and wonderful impression, with incredible support from fans from many countries.
The following day took us to the queen event of the Games, athletics, where in Saint-Denis, you can observe a wonderful panoramic view of the events, different from what you see on television, including the 10,000 meters final. To cap off our Olympic journey and our tour of Paris, we went to the road cycling event, a unique occasion. From 10 in the morning, we held our spot on the side of the road, enjoying an incredible atmosphere, especially among Belgian, French, Dutch, and Italian fans who came to witness this mythical event. With three laps on this cobblestone circuit, it created a unique scene.
